Hotel Lighting Design: Creating Luxury Guest Experiences

Hotel lighting is one of the most complex lighting briefs in the industry. A single property needs to serve dozens of different functions — lobby, restaurant, bar, spa, corridors, guest rooms — each with completely different requirements. Here's how the best hotels approach it.

The lobby: first impressions

The lobby sets the tone for the entire property. It needs to be welcoming, impressive, and immediately communicate the brand. A statement chandelier or sculptural lighting installation creates a focal point that guests remember. The ambient light level should be warm and relatively low — enough to navigate comfortably, not so bright that it feels like an airport terminal.

Guest rooms: control and comfort

The best hotel rooms give guests control. Bedside panels that manage all room lighting, blackout capability, a reading light that doesn't disturb a sleeping partner, and a 'welcome' scene that activates when the door opens. These details are what separate a luxury property from a standard one. Colour temperature should be 2700K throughout — warm, flattering, and relaxing.

Corridors: atmosphere, not just function

Hotel corridors are often an afterthought — a row of downlights at full brightness. The best properties treat corridors as part of the guest journey. Wall-mounted accent lights, recessed floor lighting, or cove lighting along the ceiling create a sense of arrival at each room rather than a functional passageway.

Spa and wellness areas

Spa lighting should be the most carefully considered in the property. Low levels, warm colour temperatures, no harsh shadows, and complete dimming control. Circadian lighting — which shifts colour temperature throughout the day to support natural sleep rhythms — is increasingly specified in high-end wellness facilities.

F&B spaces

Hotel restaurants and bars follow the same principles as standalone venues — warm, dim, table-focused — with the added complexity of needing to transition between breakfast service and evening dining. Flexible dimming and scene control are essential.
